COLOUR TESTING

Colour Testing

This is probably one of the common stand out colours always used for a powerful attraction of people to the magazine. Like for example a magazine would have a red exclusive on an exclusive story in the magazine. The only thing is that I feel this colour doesn’t go with a huge variety of others.

Blue is also a very good universal colour that I personally like as well and it works sightly more universally than red with other background colours so it is a better recommended colour. This is a good universal colour for both sexes.

Yellow is a very bright and nice looking colour but the brightness is not very well working unless it is on a very dark background. Other =wise if the background is a light colour you are buggered as theatrical would be able to be read.seems more like it is a more feminine colour.

Green is also a very bright colour, similar to the yellow but it can work slightly more universally with backgrounds. But it isn’t one of my favourite colours. Does work with a larger audience though. Boys and girls.

Pink is a good colour for more universal backgrounds, can be used on lighter backgrounds but themain problem is that it is refered to as a very female colour so wouldn’t work with the guys.

Black is the standard colour and has a nice bold stand out style but the problem is that it would not work with a darker coloured magazine but it works as standard in most magazines.

FONT TESTING

This font is nice and casual seeming with the still able to read part about it but there is and it still also has its professional approach, it is basically the standard font to be used by anyone but it can be a bit boring.

This font is yet again a simple but very nicely modern looking and still simple to read and it has a nice presentable look and it still seems casual and business- like.

This font is very nice but the simple problems are that it isn’t the easiest to read and it probably isn’t really the style for a student magazine for many young people to read. This font also is very small so it deffinately isn’t the one.

This font seems fairly similar to the Apple casual font (the first one). This font has a slightly more presentable style to it and I feel it could work in a student magazine. It still seems professional enough but it still has that student laid back look. This is probably my favourite font so far.

This font is very professional and modern looking with a very good look. The problem straight off though is that the text itself is very small even compared o the other fonts I have so far.

This font is  very bold one and it has a powerful look to it but similar to a few before it has a little too much spacing and when huge amounts of writing needs to be done it just doesn’t make the cut.

ANALYSIS OF MAGAZINE COVERS (espn)

This magazine compared to the previous i feel is better because the cover seems more uplifting and it seems like it has alot more news to offer than the SPORT magazine from the previous analysis. The cover has more stories occupying the page itself and seems more attractive, it feels more likely to pull a reader in.

The cover keeps a consistent colour use on this page so that it does not appear too confusing with using lots of different colours that would seem overwhelming. The colours all relate to the colours of the sports kit in the centre of the cover, the Barcelona kit colours are a purple-blue sort of colour and a reddish colour. The title of the magazine most easily keeps up with these colours with the ESPN being blue and above it 'THE FAN ISSUE' being the red colour.

The layout is simple with the key image to the main story in the centre and the other keys news in text with colour used to make it more appealing.

ANALYSIS OF MAGAZINE COVERS (Sport)

The first magazine cover i will look at is the cover of SPORT magazine, simple name so you definitely know what this magazines about. The colours and fonts used are fairly basic but they do work very well together, for example the gold used for a fair fraction of the font i feel works really well with the black background. the variation in the font size used on this cover is good as well because the more important stories have a much bolder and larger font.

The problems with this cover though is that i feel there needs to more on it to really entice the reader into reading on. If there was more stories dotted around on the cover it would have more of an impact on whoever is looking at it and it gives a preview of whats inside so the person would know what they are going to get.

Preliminary Task

For the preliminary task in Media Studies i have to create a magazine front cover and the contents page based on a style for my age group.

My initial ideas are to go with a sports style magazine for my age group because i know that many people are interested in the various sports that they can partake in. I could also do a magazine based on technology and the various subjects that can be talked about.
